A Collaborative Innovation: Preserving Nuclear Expertise for the Future

In 2025, the National College for Nuclear and Clean Energy, working in close collaboration with e-Aspire, delivered a forward-thinking response to one of the nuclear sector’s most pressing challenges: the loss of critical industry knowledge as experienced professionals retire or transition out of the workforce.

At the heart of this collaboration is the Sector Experts initiative, delivered through a purpose-built digital learning hub developed by e-Aspire using its Channel2Learning platform. Together, the National College and e-Aspire combined sector leadership, educational insight, and digital innovation to create a national solution that safeguards expertise while supporting the future growth of the nuclear workforce.

“We were seeing decades of invaluable knowledge at risk of being lost just as the demand for skilled people in the nuclear sector continues to grow,” said a spokesperson for the National College for Nuclear and Clean Energy. (Donna / Claire)

“The Sector Experts initiative allows us to capture that expertise and pass it on in a structured, supported way, while opening new and meaningful pathways into education and training for industry professionals.”

The National College recognised the ongoing challenge faced by Further and Higher Education in attracting and retaining Suitably Qualified and Experienced Personnel (SQEP). Rather than allowing this to constrain workforce development, the College created Sector Experts, to simplify entry into teaching and training roles, providing mentoring, guidance, and digital support for incoming sector experts.

Despite the complexity of education-sector regulation, Sector Experts focused on removing unnecessary barriers, creating a welcoming, confidence-building route into education.

“What mattered to us was making the transition from industry into teaching feel achievable and valued,” the National College added.

“This programme supports professionals who want to give something back, while ensuring learners benefit from real-world experience and insight.”

e-Aspire played a central role in transforming this vision into a scalable, future-proof solution. Through Channel2Learning, e-Aspire designed and delivered a secure, white-label digital learning hub and produced high-quality eLearning, digital training media, and interactive learning content to support the initiative.

“From the outset, this was about more than technology,” said Mike Mulvihill, Founder of  e-Aspire.

“It was about creating a digital environment where expert knowledge could be captured, shared, and respected – and where experienced professionals felt supported in becoming educators.”

The Sector Experts themselves bring deep understanding of nuclear culture, regulation, and operational realities. Their lived experience strengthens learning, improves decision-making, and ensures new entrants are prepared for the unique demands of working in a highly regulated nuclear environment.

“By combining the National College’s sector leadership with e-Aspire’s digital learning expertise, we’ve created something that is practical, human, and genuinely impactful,”  Mike Mulvihill added.

“Channel2Learning enables this knowledge to live on, nationally and at scale, rather than disappearing when people leave the industry.”

This collaborative venture stands as a powerful example of how education, industry, and digital innovation can work together to secure the future of critical national skills. Through the Sector Experts initiative, the National College for Nuclear and Clean Energy are not only preserving knowledge – but they are also empowering people, strengthening the workforce, and setting a new benchmark for sector-led digital education.
